Page 6
This is a page of an early part of the story as the EVO character has started transforming from the one cell creature into something else.
The process of developing the sea affect was quite hard. I wanted it to have a slight radio-active quality, so went through some stages of development in testing out layer effects. Ended up doing a combination of 4 layers with three different layer effects on them. Everything else is just a series of layer build ups.
Ending with the cartoon work being added by illustrator.

Where it all started
With a little scrapping around the piles of paper, I finally found the original sketch that I mentioned in the post yesterday. So, with great evolutionary respect, I present the drawing that started it all off.

Story evolution
Just to tell you a little of how the story started.
I was sitting doodling! Yes, doodling in a meeting I had a my art college. Not that I think doodling is a bad thing, (as I try to promote this to my students as a creative method of abstract thinking) but on this day, it distracted me away from the tedium of trying to understand the Greek that was being spoken in the meeting. I was messing with shapes for characters, and one of the things I ended up with, was the form that is now closely resembling the fish like creature that can be seen in the image above. I believe that this was initiated by a Guinness advert I was showing my students about the evolution of Guinness, which begins (or ends) with the tasting of the primordial soup by three lung fish like creatures. To make a long story short, and having a very keen interest in Charles Darwin, my brain pieced together a concept of a story of following one single cell amoeba as it evolved in the entire life cycle to the present day.
The story has grown and the development changed a little, but the main concept remains. As it evolves I am trying hard to see how to incorporate many of the aspects of what makes man a man in physical and mental aspects and draw that into th eplot and the humour.

Character design
This is the main character focus of the story of Evo. The character goes through many processes of development, but fundamentally retains these main characteristics.
I have always been interested in Darwin's theories of natural selection, and I guess this is what has driven me to develop this story. I really wanted to look at the whole concept with a little humour. Trying to add the notion that evolution may have been triggered by the "Man upstairs" or is it "Mother Nature" talking. Either way, the development takes turns for the worse until the climatic end.

Evolution - Day One!!
Welcome to the new blog of EVO. A new graphic novel being developed by artist Rob Snow. The intention of this blog is to make aware some of the design and story aspects of the new novel. At present 25 pages have been written and designed and some design work has been done to accompany it. What I am hoping is that over the next month I can double the output and make the complete panels available to look for a publisher. To star with I share a mock-up of the book cover as I see it. Hope you enjoy the blog and hope you will follow till the publication. Thanks!! Let's evolve together.
